Hamilton’s Aquatic Centre was designed with three key factors in mind: pedestrian access, internal experience, and materiality. The pool spaces are surrounded by lush greenery, providing shade and privacy, and can be seen from any point in the main circulation hallways. However, the final ‘reveal’ is at the end where a visitor exits the changerooms into the glazed hallway to the pool area where they get a full view of all the greenery and light entering the space. The site has no street frontage, making the entire block a pedestrianized hub for various activities such as a farmers market extension, parks, basketball and tennis courts, and an outdoor splashpad that doubles as an ice rink in winter. Lastly, the current bright orange-brown hue of the copper façade blends in with the rest of Hamilton’s downtown material palette, but as we’re seeing a shift towards steel and glass high-rise structures, the copper will begin to oxidize turning into a stunning bright blue that will complement its neighboring buildings.

From research conducted during a separate project, it became apparent that Bancroft, Ontario has a vibrant culture invested in the arts and history. Their downtown streets are adorned with numerous museums, galleries, and antique shops. In light of this, I envisioned a studio space and public gallery that would not only benefit residents, but also enhance the community. The studio space is accessible to all, and extends towards the community green space located south of Madawaska St. The studio's moveable glazed walls allow artists to easily access the street art wall where they can paint murals for the community to enjoy. This art-centered approach to community programming allows not only artists to use the space, but for any resident of Bancroft to enjoy the galleries, as it’s not gated off only for residential access, and the murals could be large enough to be seen by anyone from Hastings Street.

The Dufferin Bloor neighborhood has a rich history centered around its love of bread, which has been sustained through two wood ovens in the local park for over two decades. Nothing brings people together quite like food, and in honour of the neighborhood's history, the driving force of the design behind the city high school is the implementation of the culinary program and the greenhouse. These complementary programs work together to create a stimulating academic environment for students, incorporating natural materials, greenery, and natural light. Furthermore, the school aims to serve as a community space where people can come together and share meals. The culinary students benefit from hands-on experience in growing produce within the greenhouse and access to fresh ingredients for their training, while the community can enjoy the fruits of their labor with delicious meals and fresh bread.
